Embera and HomePlan join forces to make an impact for those in greatest need

September 11, 2023

Embera does more than just develop real estate in the Netherlands. As a partner of the HomePlan Foundation, we also contribute to building homes for the most impoverished people in Latin America. We have been a project sponsor of this Dutch foundation since 2022. Each year, we contribute to the construction of a house in South America—both financially and by rolling up our sleeves ourselves. ‍

Embera and HomePlan Foundation partnership for home construction in Latin America

It is only logical that Embera and the HomePlan Foundation found each other in a partnership, according to Patricia Dijkstra of HomePlan. “We both share the ambition to make an impact with our work.” She describes the collaboration with Embera as very positive. “The people at Embera have been supporting us privately for years. Moreover, they have a personal connection to Latin America, so they understand what is happening there and what the people need. As a new partner, Embera immediately chose to sponsor a project. Partners usually start with a smaller contribution. That choice by Embera shows their motivation to truly make a difference.”

Lasting impact

HomePlan has about fifty corporate partners who support the foundation in various ways. As a project sponsor, Embera travels to Latin America once a year to help build the sponsored house. Patricia: “We work alongside the local population to finish the home. But more importantly, these trips are about meeting the people you are sponsoring. That leaves a lasting impression on everyone involved.”

More than bricks and mortar

Since 1997, HomePlan has built 4,400 homes for the poorest people in Latin America and South Africa, working together with local builders. It goes beyond just bricks and mortar, however. Patricia: “We don’t just give people a roof over their heads; we give them a future. There is a reason we say: House. Home. Future. We also provide local education, such as computer courses and construction training. This gives young people the chance to earn a diploma and build a future. We also set up vegetable gardens with the residents, helping them become self-sufficient. That is how we build a sustainable future.”

Wishing the best for others

Dennis Bakker of Embera: “We get a lot of energy from our partnership with the HomePlan Foundation. We don’t just want to focus on our daily work, but also on making an impact on others. We operate on the principle that we want the best for ourselves and for others.”
