‘De Windjager’ dark ride: a first for Madurodam theme park and Embera
Moving sets, ride vehicles, flashing light and sound effects. De Windjager is no ordinary attraction. It is Madurodam’s first dark ride and the largest investment in the park’s history. Embera was once again chosen to lead this project. “This project brings together the creative freedom of designers and rigorous project management in a unique attraction,” says project manager Mike Brinkman. The attraction has been open to the public since the summer of 2025.

“We are well-acquainted with Madurodam by now,” Mike says with a laugh. On behalf of Embera, we previously managed the park’s expansion, the development of the ‘De Hollandse Meesters’ attraction, and the ‘Rivierenland’ splash and play area. “We are proud to contribute to the growth of this theme park about the Netherlands.”
A unique combination of techniques
De Windjager fits perfectly into that growth. In this dark ride, guests experience how the power of the wind has shaped the Netherlands over the centuries. “With spectacular effects, 360-degree projections, moving sets, and surprising twists, you are taken on an immersive adventure,” says Mike. “It is a unique experience, featuring video, light, sound, and wind effects. The level of detail is exceptional; upon arrival, you see the windmill blades turning, and you pass a wind-blown house, trees, lampposts, and laundry flapping on the line. It really looks as if a heavy storm has just passed through.”

Mike, of course, has already ridden De Windjager with his own children. “Seeing their enthusiasm makes me incredibly proud. That’s what you do it for—as a theme park, but also as a project manager.”
Embera played a central role in the creation of De Windjager. As project manager, Mike oversaw planning, budget, and quality. From the very start, we worked with Madurodam to create a comprehensive starter package, including a Program of Requirements, a preliminary design, and a corresponding schedule and budget. This formed a solid foundation for further development.
Together with designers, consultants, and suppliers, we developed this plan into what it is today: a building featuring integrated show rooms, a transport system, moving sets, and thematic elements.

Mike: “The challenge of project management in the leisure industry is balancing experience and technology. Even more than in other types of real estate projects, creatives must be given the space to bring their ideas to life. It’s about true customization that results in the best possible experience.
Our task is to let that creativity flourish while matching it with sound project management. This is how we guarantee quality and keep the project within budget and schedule constraints. We ask critical questions, ensure all parties involved—from designers and technicians to contractors and installers—stay sharp, and work together as efficiently as possible. We hit the brakes when something isn’t right, and push forward when necessary.
Madurodam remained in the driver’s seat throughout, able to make timely decisions thanks to continuous, clear input from the project management team. Everything was focused on the highest quality. After all, you can promise the moon, but it also has to be feasible.”
